Vertigo is a spinning sensation that can make it feel as if a person or things around him are in motion. It can be a result of trauma to the head or neck that has not been cared for properly. Some may try to live with it and hope it will eventually go away. However, this is not the best approach as vertigo can become severe and impact many aspects of a person’s life.
It is vital to understand what happens when a person experiences damage to the head or neck area. The C1 and C2 vertebrae are often the ones to be affected because of their range of motion. If these bones become misaligned, the head—weighing 10 to 14 pounds—becomes off balance. This leads to the righting reflex that starts in the canals of the ears and compensates for the head being off balance. The purpose of the righting reflex is to keep the eyes level with the horizon line. This creates a number of changes in the spine and, often, leads to the central nervous system being negatively affected.
The brainstem is located in the same area as the C1 and C2 vertebrae, and these bones have the job of protecting the brainstem. If these vertebrae become misaligned, they can place pressure on the brainstem causing improper signals to be sent to the brain about where the body is located in its environment, thereby leading to vertigo. How NUCCA Helps with Vertigo
The first thing a person should do after receiving any kind of injury to the head or neck is to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. We are specially trained to recognize this type of misalignment. At Wellspring Centre for Body Balance, we use a gentle adjustment method that allows the bones to move back into place without popping or twisting the spine. Many patients, including those in various studies, have responded positively to this type of care. Some see their vertigo become a thing of the past after only a couple of adjustments.
