Bring on the Basil

You have spent time, energy, money, sweat, possibly tears and now is the time to reap the benefits. Rhubarb, Kale, Squash, Basil, Cilantro, Peas, Garlic Scapes, Cherries, Plums, Blueberries, the list goes on… Whether the benefits come by way of ‘things to do differently next time’ or something to offer your family for dinner, may we consider it a success. Gardening contains life lessons, the curiosity of the nature in growth and survival, the potential for self-reflection and a good way to get out of the house in the early hours of the morning to check on your bounty.

So, what do we do with all this FOOD!? You’ve brought squash to work, frozen rhubarb, preserved strawberries and lined the pantry with deliciousness that will be savored in December. If you’re in the market for a new mid-afternoon pick me up, here’s a unique spin on a simple smoothie with fabulous health benefits.

As well as the super exotic and alluring taste of basil it has exceptional healing qualities. Its antioxidants help protect the skin from premature aging. The flavanoids shield your cell structures from oxygen and radiation damage. Basil also helps prevent bacterial growth. Let’s EAT SOME!

Blend all the ingredients until smooth:

3-4 Basil Leaves

1 cup frozen cherries

½ cup frozen blueberries

1-2 cups water or coconut water

Yummmm. Bring on the bounty!
